BarCamp Europe

Last Friday I stopped by at BarCamp Europe in Amsterdam. It’s an “informal conference for people in open source and technology projects” and while this was the first time it was held in Europe, it’s been around in California for a while. Any good geek will know the “foo-bar” placeholder in programming, and the bar camp was actually started as an open complement to the invitation-only foo camp that’s hosted by technology publisher Tim O’Reilly.

Even as a newbie to the European Open Source community, I felt immediately welcomed. I am late with my post, so you can find some good links on various talks here. One thing I do want to mention is I was impressed by some of the projects of the hosts at Mediamatic, particularly the “Digital Monument to the Jewish Community in the Netherlands“. I think this is a great example of how the Internet can be used in completely new, interactive, and creative ways.

Finally, I also talked a bit about Venture Capital, and someone pointed me to Jeff Clavier’s VC session at bar camp US - he did a much better job at explaining, so if you are interested in the topic check out his post .

Thanks so much to the organizers, and I can only recommend everyone to come next time. It was great fun!
