Cool Google Maps

November 29th, 2005

Since Google came out with their maps and a developer API to plug applications into its maps, many people have built visualization tools around it. The results vary from entertaining/silly to very useful. I just came across this compilation of Google Maps services, and it makes for a really interesting read:

News Mash-up: diggdot.us

November 25th, 2005

If you liked the diggdot.com (see previous post), here’s another “news mash-up”: diggdot.us

It’s a combination of Slashdot, del.icio.us/popular and digg.com - are we going to see a combination of New York Times, Washington Post, CNN and Fox next?

Google Starting Click to Call?

November 24th, 2005

Google is apparently playing with click to call. Greg Yardley has the scoop including screenshots, and there is more on searchenginewatch.
The click-to-call model has received lots of attention lately, not the least because of Ebay’s acquisition of Skype. In the presentation explaining the acquisition (PDF) , slide 23 and following talk about how Ebay […]

Craigslist to start journalism project?

November 23rd, 2005

Paidcontent.org (a great resource by the way) has an interesting post on some comments by Craig Newmark here. Apparently Craig, the founder of craigslist.org, wants to start a journalism project - I am curious. I expect something along the lines of digg.com, where readers drive what’s hot or not. There is a number of other […]

MySpace Traffic - 150,000 new users a day?!

November 17th, 2005

The recent acquisition of MySpace by News Corp. drew a lot of attention to the social networking segment, and impressively showed that the “first mover” doesn’t always win - a quick look at Alexa rankings for Friendster and MySpace shows MySpace way ahead even if Friendster’s launch preceded it (if we don’t consider the first […]

Digg vs Slashdot

November 14th, 2005

Remember the late nineties when Slashdot (/.) was the place to go for tech news? The first site that seemed like a group blog….but recently a couple of other sites are (arguably) stealing slashdot’s thunder. Take a look at digg.com, it’s getting a lot of traction and a great place for news in various segments. […]

Vertical Search

November 9th, 2005

LookSmart launched vertical search (via John Battelle). It’s an interesting approach, trying to embed vertical search at the front page of a “general purpose” search engine. At first try, my results were mixed, but certainly the ads got more targeted as I went down in the hierarchy.

Vertical Search is probably one of the hottest topics […]

Personal Video Publishing

November 7th, 2005

TechCrunch has a great post on personal video pubslishing. Make sure you read through the comments for the whole list of companies. Maybe of note is that revver offers the user the opportunity to monetize their own video content similar to what Fruitcast (see earlier post today) does to podcasts.

Online Service Aggregator Suprglu

November 7th, 2005

If you are using all the latest and hip services on the web, here is the service aggregator for you: http://www.suprglu.com/. I haven’t tried it yet and probably don’t need it either, but it’s the first service I see proclaim itself (tongue-in-cheek) as “Web 2.5″ in its blog…

If all that is too geeky for you, […]

“Adsense for Podcasts”

November 7th, 2005

A few days a new service launched, inserting ads into podcasts: Fruitcast. I have seen a few of those, such as Blast Podcast, but Fruitcast seems to be getting themost buzz. I belive that all of those services only insert little audio ads before or after your podcast in the RSS feed, and there […]
