Consumer Internet, Digital Media and Technology Conferences for 2006

January 10th, 2006

I have been asked a number of times which conferences in the Internet/Consumer/Media/Technology area are worth attending, and since I was putting together a list for my own calendar I thought I’d post it here. I have not attended all of these events in the past myself, so in part rely on accounts of colleagues - but even if I don’t go I usually like to check out the conference coverage.

You’ll notice that there are only few events in Europe…since I just moved back here a few months ago, I would really appreciate pointers to any events that should be on this list!

January

  • Macworld Expo, January 9th-13th, San Francisco, CA: Wish I was there…

February

  • DEMO Feb 6th-8th, Phoenix, AZ: Lots of product and company launches, lots of VCs, some hype but good overview
  • CodeCon, Feb 10th-12th, San Francisco, CA: Strictly for geeks.
  • DEMO@15 Feb 23th-15th, Scottsdale, AZ: Another member of the DEMO family
  • TED Feb 22nd-25th, Monterey, CA: High-level conference on media, design, technology etc. Invite-only.

March

  • O’Reilly Emerging Technology Conference, March 6-9th, San Diego, CA: Where geeks meet VCs and figure out what the digerati crowd needs next.
  • PC Forum, March 12-14th, Carlsbad, CA: High-level conference hosted by Esther Dyson on Internet, start-ups and more. Nothing new for geeks, but broad overview for those who can’t keep track of 100 RSS feeds.

April

  • Linuxworld, April 3rd-6th, Boston, MA: More of a show than a conference, but great overview on where Linux is heading

May

  • Innovate Europe, May 15th-17th, Zaragoza, Spain: I haven’t been yet, but apparently it is a forum for start-ups in Europe…
  • Red Herring Spring 2006, May 16th-18th, San Francisco, CA: I have never been…so no idea. They have an event planned ofr Europe as well, time TBD.
  • E3 and E3 Expo, May 9th-12th, Los Angeles, CA: If you are into gaming (the “interactive industry” to put it more broadly), this is the place to go.
  • D4, May30th-June 4th, Carlsbad, CA: WSJ’s Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher take a look at “all things digital” - maybe you could say this is a cross between PC Forum and TED

June

  • Reboot, June 2-3rd, Coopenhagen, Danmark: I haven’t been but heard a lot of good things about this informal conference for the European Internet crowd
  • Supernova, June 22nd-23rd, San Francisco, CA: Check out their webpage, but it’s about “technology-driven transformation of computing, communications, digital media, and business”

July

  • Webvision, July 20th-21st, Portland, OR: I have never been, but it sounds like an inetresting event on “the future of design, content creation, technology and business strategy”.

August

  • Linuxworld, August 14th-17th, San Francisco, CA: See above.

November

  • Linuxworld, November 14th-17th, Cologne, Germany: Every coountry gets its own..see the link for other countries, too.
  • Consumer Technology Ventures, November 7th-8th, Redwood City, CA: The VC’s route
to dealflow…startups presenting in 15min slots for two days. There are also similar events for the Networking industry and others by the same organizer.

Stay tuned for this year’s dates on these events:

  • Gnomedex, Chris Pirillo’s conference for geeks
  • Les Blogs, great gathering of European bloggers and the Euro Internet scene in general
  • Web 2.0 Conference, San Francisco, CA: Silicon Valley’s gathering spot for the hotttest stuff on the web, with a very healthy dose of hype
  • Always On by Tony Perkins: I couldn’t find the date yet for this year’s edition, but it’ll be in Stanford I presume and yet another one of the key Silicon Vallley events to attend if you want to be part of the “in-crowd”.
  • Chaos Communication Congress, the yearly gathering of the Chaos Computer Club, usually around New Years’s in Berlin. You are definitely better off with a solid programming background when attending here…

Perhaps consider adding cmf2006 - cmf2006.dk - a Web conference in Denmark this November. A bit more business focus than Reboot, but also informal and good athmosphere.

    Cheers, Janus

Hi Janus, Thanks for the hint - cmf2006 is maybe a bit too CMS focused for me but I am sure some readers will find it interesting - I already passed it on to a friend int he field.
    Best

How about http://www.lift06.org/blog/ which looked interesting to me. Short notice though.

There’s also NEXT (http://www.next2005.dk) in Copenhagen, which was rather interesting last year. It’s both a conference and an exhibition on emerging technologies.

Hi Christian, if you’re going to reboot this year, perhaps we could meet up. It was a phenomenal conference last year and was hugely influential in setting a direction for our work to date on (http://www.reevoo.com).
