DEMO is over, back in San Francisco

February 10th, 2006

demologo1.gifI got back from DEMO yesterday. Impression overkill - I’ll need some time to digest all I have seen.

There is a ton of blogs on DEMO and they have done a much better job than I can in describing what’s hot or not, so here are just a few impressions from the sixty-odd presentations I saw - in alphabetical order:

  • Broadramp
A new way to deliver video content in a way that’s a lot more bandwidth efficient and needs almost no buffering time at loading - I will need to find out what the trade-off is (as one of my professors always said: “The good engineer never gets anything for free”), but the demo was cool for sure
  • Eqo
Cool service to get Skype bridged to your phone….the only catch is that your PC needs to be on and running Skype for you to access it from your mobile, so if you are a laptop user you are likely out of luck…
  • iotum
If you are busy, you’d want to look at what iotum offers. Seems like a compellin way to organize your phone calls and make sure you have time for productive work or time off…
  • Kosmix
Guess I need to have one search engine on the list: Kosmix. These guys have developed a neat categorizing technology. Remember NorthernLight the way it looked many years ago? This looked similar to me, with the difference that it really seems to produce relevant categories. I’d need to understand how much human touch is involved in creating the categories, though…
  • Riya
These guys have a fundamental innovation - they can recognize faces across your photo collection, so you can for example have them collect all the pics that show your kid. I’ll get a beta invite soon they promised, and let you know how well it really works.
  • Transparensee
I am sure it’s a bad description, but I’d call it fuzzy database search - finally if you are looking for a camera up to $300 and there is one that matches all your search criteria but costs $301 it’d going to suggest it to you (and lots more…)
  • VSee Lab
This looks like a really good videoconferencing software that I’d like to try it out once I have more time - the quality was amazing.

There were many other really good companies and I’ll write them up as I learn more about them and when I have tried their product - and I am sure I have forgotten many good ones!
